Erich & Ingrid Triller Swedish Tobo Studio Pottery Vase

About the Item

Erich Triller (German, 1898-1972) and Ingrid (Swedish, 1905-1982) produced what is considered the finest stoneware in Scandinavia and were completely committed to the concept of aesthetic purity. Each piece was hand-thrown and glazed, the forms supple and pure and free of decoration. Erich met Swedish-born Ingrid while both were studying at Staatliche Keramische Fachshcule, Germany. They both trained under highly acclaimed Bauhaus instructor Otto Lindig and returned to Sweden to establish their studio in 1935. They exhibited widely and their work was popular among connoisseurs and pieces are held today in museums across the world including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. A simplistic yet stunning Swedish Tobo studio pottery vase decorated in tobacco glazes by Eric (German, 1898-1972) and Ingrid Triller (Swedish, 1905-1982) and dating from the 1940’s. The stoneware vase stands on a flat unglazed base and is of wide round bulb shape with short, raised funnel shaped neck. The vase is decorated in brown ‘tobacco’ glazes with darker elements scattered over a lighter brown glaze. The vase is hand signed to the base and includes an old paper label, possibly from an exhibition. Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces. For similar examples please see Scandinavian Art Pottery Demark and Sweden by Robin Hecht Minardi, illustrated page 163. Excellent condition with light wear associated with age and use.
