About the Item

A exceptional, large and impressive pair antique twin handled majolica vases originating from one of the top Austrian or Bohemian makers and dating from the 19th century. Possibly exhibition pieces the earthenware vases stand raised on an elaborately decorated and formed pedestal foot with four legs with a narrow stem supporting a large heart shaped body with a funnel neck and shaped and raised opening. Elaborate handles are applied to either side with serpent head terminals ‘biting’ on the upper edge. The vases are molded in relief with decorative panels some with scrolling flowers with winged cherub heads set against a shell background applied to either side of the neck. The vases are hand painted in tones of brown, cream, red, pink and blue with traditional turquoise glazes to the base and inside of the vases. The vases have unidentified marks to the bases and are numbered 312 and believe that these were made by either Wilhelm Schiller or Julius Dressler who used similar coloring on other elaborate pieces. Regardless an absolute stunning pair of vases. Acquired from the UK Art Market. In very good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
