About the Item

A lovely vintage glass vase made by talented Tapio Wirkkala known as “Niva”, Iittala. Finnish Glass Art Finland has for many become synonymous with design in many areas, especially when it comes to Finnish glass art. Finnish glass art has been made and still is made at factories and studios, where they have produced some of the most iconic pieces, which can be seen at exhibitions and museums all over the world today. The international spotlight for its Finnish glass art came in the mid 1930's with artists and designers such as Alvar Aalto, Oiva Toikka, Tamara Aladin, Tapio Wirkkala, Kaj Franck, and Timo Sarpaneva. In the 19060s and 70s we also have important designers such as Helena Tynell and Nanny Still among others. However, newer artists are still emerging to continue the tradition in innovative forms. Currently one of the biggest new names in Finnish glass art is Anu Penttinen. Like many emerging designers, she works for leading glass design company Iittala, which has become world famous. Nuutajarvi, a community which is well known and has been for a long time for its glassworks and artists. It is for instance here where Oiva Toikka's famous glass birds were made for forty years, along with designs from the factory's former art director and designer Kaj Franck. It is the oldest glassworks in Finland and thus it has been leading when it comes to Finnish art glass and design.

Vintage Finnish Glass Vase by Erkki Vesanto, Signed, Rare Collectible Decorative
By Erkki Vesanto, Iittala
Located in Milano, IT
Murano Glass is a world-famous excellence. Not everyone, though, knows Finnish Glass – an equally refined, and possibly less common niche of blown and moulded vases and sculptures. The present vase is indeed an example of this latter school: designed by Erkki Vesanto, whose signature is clearly legible behind the base, it’s a “Sommerso” grey and clear vase, with a thick vase and a very fine construction. It is extremely well preserved and a wonderful decorative touch for your special interior. Will look great on a coffee table, console or bookshelf.
