Gallé was the son of a ceramics and furniture manufacturer. He studied philosophy, botany and drawing during his youth. Later he would learn glassmaking in Meisenthal, later working in his father's factory in Nancy after the Franco-Prussian War. In his early work he would use clean glass embellished with enamels, but he would soon turn to an original style through the use of heavy, opaque glass cut or etched with floral motifs. His career would take off after his work received excellent reviews at the Paris Exhibition of 1878.
He was, along with Antonin Daum, the creator of the movement known as École de Nancy, (School of Nancy).
