German Multicolored Ceramic Vase by Walther Zander

About the Item

This beautiful multicolored glazed vase is one of Walther Zanders very thin-walled turned bowls with foot. Walther Zander was a ceramist from Hamburg who worked together with his wife, Karin Zander, in their studio. Both completed their training and apprenticeship with Gustav Grimm in Hamburg, Germany, where Walther Zander opened his own studio in 1961, which he ran together with his wife Karin from 1962. Early experiments with glaze techniques for vessels and architectural ceramics as well as collaboration with architects soon led to numerous murals and reliefs that still adorn buildings in Hamburg today. In the field of vessel ceramics, the focus of their work was on constructed and freely turned stoneware and porcelain. A special preference of the Zanders was very thin-walled turned bowls, tins and vases as well as double-walled crests with softly rounded, grippy edges. The Zanders used various glazes, some of them using new techniques. Walther and Karin Zander are among the most famous and award-winning North German ceramists.
