Handcrafted Turned Wood Sculptural Vase By Lloyd Cheney, 2002

About the Item

Beautiful example of late 20th/21st century American craftsman Lloyd Cheney who mastered the art of making wood vessels on a ringmaster. Made in 2002, signed and penny stamped, this turned wood vessel features a striking zebra wood rim atop an inverted cone made of most likely mahogany. A beautifully turned vase with a delightfully silken texture. The quality of craftsmanship is evident in the surface and form of this decorative wood vessel. The wood has been turned to create a wonderful, almost porcelain-like delicacy. Each of Cheney's vases is unique. He used exotic hardwoods and creates his art by wood-turning on lathes, the wood-worker's version of a potter's wheel. He uses more than 100 species of wood. He doesn't stain or color the wood, he says, as it would detract from its natural beauty. This vessel is in excellent vintage condition, with light scratches on one side, as shown in photos. It measures 9" tall x 6.75" diameter.
