About the Item
Hedwig Bollhagen (1907–2001)
Unique ceramic vase by renowned German ceramicist Hedwig Bollhagen, created in 1929.
The piece is signed with her monogram “HB” and dated 6 October 1939.
The vase has a classic, conical jar shape with a gently rounded shoulder and narrow neck. It is coated in a light glaze and decorated with incised motifs of stylised, brown-glazed tigers in motion, surrounded by abstract foliage and butterfly-like elements.
The neck is finished with a deliberately dripping glaze design, adding to the expressive character of the piece.
Hedwig Bollhagen was a central figure in 20th-century German ceramics, known especially for her work at the HB-Werkstätten für Keramik in Marwitz, near Berlin. Today, a museum dedicated to her life and work is located on the site.
