Huge Carstens Tönnieshof Fat Lava Vase with Extraordinary Sculptural Form, C1970

About the Item
Monumental 70's form. Measures: 18" tall and 19" across. It commands space and will be admired and complimented by all your guests whether in your home, museum or curated commercial space. We all recognize that sometimes, an example is just breathtaking although small. And, then, there are objects d'art with scale, presence, color, form and the spirit of their age. Carsten's fat lava ceramics are broadly admired and although production of them began in the late 60's, most were produced in the 70's... This vase is a veritable gunmetal Bessemer crucible unable to contain the explosion of blood red, orange, and yellow pumiced lava climbing the shoulder, tumbling back upon itself and leaking out the vents along the sides. Just look at the detail shots to see the crawling of the gunmetal glaze and the depth of color in the lava. German mid century modern ceramics can stop you in your tracks and this one does because although it is indeed a vase, it is also a formidable sculptural form.
