Hungarian Ceramic Eosin Glaze Vase, Landscape with Hawk by Zsolnay, circa 1900

About

Large ceramic vase with a textured eosin glaze by Zsolnay, decorated with a landscape, trees and a hawk. Signed with the red mark of five churches and form number 5305 ! (Please read detailed information about the importance of form numbers). Purchased on June 11th, 1994 at Christie's, see additional two Christie's stickers. The original Christie's invoice will be included with the purchase. The majority of authentic Zsolnay pieces come marked with an incised form number that corresponds to that piece’s production year. Any form number smaller than 9140 means that the piece predates 1940; any number less than 5675 suggests the piece predates the dawn of the 20th century. The Zsolnay factory was established by Miklos Zsolnay in Pecs, Hungary in 1853. In 1863, his son Vilmos Zsolnay (1828-1900) joined the company, eventually becoming director and leading the company to worldwide recognition. The Eosin Glaze. Many Zsolnay ceramics are noted for the use of the eosin process that was introduced in 1893. The process results in a light red iridescence of the first prepared hue, hence the term eosin (Greek eos, flush of dawn). Different eosin colours and processes were developed over time. The eosin-based iridescence became a favourite of art nouveau and Jugendstil artists
