Biography
Alfredo Barbini (1912-2007) one of the greatest Murano glass artists of the 20th century. He learned the traditional techniques of glass blowing during his adolescence as an apprentice at the Franchetti Crystals and at SAIAR Ferro Toso. He then worked in the Zecchin-Martinuzzi Furnace alongside the sculptor Napoleone Martinuzzi, the collaboration lasted from 1932-1936 creating the first solid glass sculptures designed by Martinuzzi, this experience will be fundamental for his artistic training. After the closure of the factory, he became a first-rate teacher at the V.A.M.S.A. (Murano Artistic Glass Company, Anonymous Society). Here, too, his contribution in the field of glass sculpture is remarkable, and in that of thick materials, with particular chromatic effects, such as the so-called “smoked glass”. He carries out works based on drawings by the painter Luigi Scarpa Croce, including the plate with fish presented at the Venice Biennale in 1942. Subsequently in 1946 he becomes artistic director of the Gino Cenedese factory until 1950 where he opens his own factory, the Vetreria Alfredo Barbini and he can experiment his creativity freely and he can already be seen at the XXX Venice Biennale in 1960 with the submerged glass series of fish, tulips, figures modeled on a single block with layers of glass of different tones and shades. Brilliant glass artist will continue the search for him flanked by his children.
One of the most important glass factories together with Venini , Salviati and Barovier & Toso.

Alfredo Barbini Murano Art Glass Vase 1971
A vintage Murano glass vase designed and produced by Alfredo Barbini in 1971. The vase is made of mouth-blown clear glass and has a quadruple opening. Signed on the base with engraved company signature 'A. Barbini' and company label. The vase is an authentic piece of 20th century Murano art glass and a rare work by Alfredo Barbini.
Alfredo Barbini (1912 – 2007) attended to the Abate Zanetti glass design school at the age of ten and worked at the S.A.I.A.R. Ferro Toso, Cristalleria di Murano and at the Zecchin-Martinuzzi furnace. In the early 1930s he became master craftsman at V.A.M.S.A. He executed works designed by the painter Luigi Scarpa Croce, such as the dish with fishes exhibited at the 1942 Biennale di Venezia. In 1946 he moved to Gino Cenedese & C as partner and director. At the 1948 Biennale, he exhibited an outstanding series of sculptures with the surface corroded with acid: “Collasso”, “Putto”, “Diana Nera”. In 1950 he started his own glass workshop the Vetreria Alfredo Barbini. Several works of Barbini are of outstanding importance for the muranese glass art as there are the Sasso, Scavo, Inciso, Sommerso or the Ad Agnelli objects.
