John Hassell Doulton Lambeth Twins Ware Painted Salt Glazed Vase
About the Item
A delightful and sought after Doulton Lambeth Twins Ware vase painted with twin boys by renowned artist and illustrator John Hassall (British, 1868-1948) and dating from around 1905. The stoneware vase stands raised on a ring shaped foot with an elongated pear shaped body with a wide trumpet shaped top. The body of the vase is decorated in natural salt glazes with the upper section in darker brown glazes and with twin boys painted to one side standing resting one arm on the others shoulder and both similarly dressed weary a French beret style hat, roll neck tops, shorts, long blue socks and black shoes. In typical Hassall style one wears a bright orange top while the other a bright blue one. Both are painted in naturalistic colors within a black outline with clothing in black, orange and blue. The scene is signed J Hassall. The vase has impressed Doulton marks to the base and is numbered 6639.
Provenance: From the collection of the late Dr Ronald Austin of Swansea and acquired by a Belgium based collector from the UK Art Market.
The vase is in good condition and displays well.
