Doulton Lambeth Manchester Crypt Printed Salt Glazed Vase

About the Item

A very unusual Doulton Lambeth salt glazed sleeve shaped vase printed with a scene titled CRYPT dating from the early 20th century. The stoneware vase stands on a wide shaped stepped base and is of tall cylindrical shaped with a slightly flared rim. The body of the vase is printed in black with a scene titled CRYPT DISCOVERED BELOW THE CELLARS OF 20, OLD MILLGATE, MANCHESTER and set against a natural salt glazed ground with a brown glazed band around the upper body. The vase has an impressed maker’s mark and is numbered 3717 and has an indistinct incised artist mark which we have been unable to identify. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.

    This bottle-shaped Doulton Lambeth specimen vase is from the Carrara Ware range which was a stoneware range of moderate output made between about 1887 and 1903. This vase was designed by Mildred B Smallfield (1862-?) who was listed as a senior assistant at Doulton in 1882. It is decorated with a pattern of enamelled stylized flowers in blue, green and white, and enhanced with gilding on an ivory coloured ground. Her assistant was Minnie Neal. A similar vase by Smallfield is shown on page 81 of the "Lambeth Art Pottery" exhibition catalogue, published by Richard Dennis in 1975.
