Josef Ekberg Gustavsberg Sgraffito Patterned Vase

About the Item

Josef Ekberg (Swedish, 1877-1945) joined Gustavsberg in 1889 and worked there until his death in 1945. He was the factory’s leading designer and Gustavsberg exhibitions early in the 20th century were primarily made up of Ekberg’s designs. His specialty was sgraffito decoration. He was Kåge’s mentor and was instrumental in influencing and ushering in an astonishing generation of technically skilled and highly creative Swedish ceramicists. A stunning hand-crafted Gustavsberg sgraffito vase decorated with stylized leaves against a blue glazed ground by Josef Ekberg and dated 1922. The vase stands on a narrow round unglazed foot rim with a recessed glazed base and is of squat rounded shape with narrow round raised top rim. The body of the vase is decorated in low relief with a repeat pattern of stylized leaves in cadet blue glaze against a powder blue ground. The vase has a blue painted Gustavsberg mark to the base along with a painted monogram for Josef Ekberg and is numbered 289 and dated 1922. Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces. For similar examples please see Scandinavian Art Pottery Demark and Sweden by Robin Hecht Minardi. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
