About the Item
Magnificent large majolica vase attributed to Jules Vieillard & Cie, Bordeaux, circa 1870. This richly decorated urn is a superb example of French Renaissance Revival majolica, featuring an extraordinary polychrome glaze with mythological scenes in the manner of the Italian maiolica tradition. One side depicts a neoclassical bacchanal scene with dancing figures, while the reverse shows a vivid mythological tableau with satyrs and ancient offerings. The turquoise ground is beautifully contrasted with ochre, cobalt blue, emerald green, and yellow tones, framed by intricate geometric borders.
The vase is adorned with sculpted female masks at the shoulders, from which emerge the serpent-shaped handles—an exceptional detail demonstrating the virtuosity of 19th-century French ceramicists. The foot and neck are highlighted by yellow and blue radiating motifs typical of Vieillard’s workshop.
Marked “J.V. Bx” under the base for Jules Vieillard, Bordeaux. Some wear and small chips at the base consistent with age. A rare and decorative collector’s piece showcasing the exuberance and refinement of French majolica production during the Second Empire.
