About the Item
Large and stoutly potted Danto-Awaji pottery vase with sprigged white peony designs standing out in stark relief against a dark green glaze. Arresting form, inspired by a traditional bronze shape, with thick, articulated mouthrim and exaggerated wide shoulder. Hand turned with hand-sprigged and applied designs. Circa 1910. Impressed Danto kiln mark of a plover flying by a double peaked mountain. The Danto kiln is recognized as the successor to the famous Minpei kiln. 8 1/2" high, 11" diameter. Small chip at footrim, area of scratching on the lower body, several glaze bubble pinholes, as shown.
