About the Item

A stunning oversized Murano vase by Salviati, one of the most storied glassmakers on the Venetian island of Murano. This sculptural vessel is blown in Iridato glass, a specialized form of Murano glass known for its shimmering, oil-slick iridescence—created by exposing metal oxides to high heat during the finishing process. The resulting surface radiates with subtle hues that shift in the light, evoking the opalescent sheen of excavated Roman glass while feeling entirely contemporary. Founded in 1859 by Antonio Salviati, the Salviati company was instrumental in the 19th-century revival of Venetian glass. Working with prominent architects and designers, the firm brought traditional Murano glassmaking techniques into the modern age. Salviati helped redefine Murano glass as not just decorative, but as fine art and high design—collaborating with major cultural institutions across Europe and the United States. This particular vase channels the poetic imperfection of ancient Roman glassware, reimagined through the lens of postwar Italian design: oversized, minimalist in form, yet rich in texture and surface treatment. The blown glass body is intentionally irregular, with a softly mottled finish and subtle undulations that emphasize its handmade nature.
