About the Item
This is a large, signature piece by the renowned French ceramic designer/maker, Jean Austruy (1910-2012), see signature on the base. Jean Austruy was born in Castres in southern France in 1910. He started studying art at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Montpellier and later sculpture at both Ecole des Arts Décoratifs and Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Like many other ceramic artists, J. Austruy took advantage of the rising demand after the end of WWII for decorative, utilitarian pottery pieces. Between the years of 1947 and 2005 he owned his own pottery studio in southern France were he worked together with his wife Jacqueline and later, his son Yves. Jean Austruy retired at the age of 80.
This specific vase is part of a collection of pottery pieces made in the late 1940s/50s with innovative, swirling handles in monochromatic colors. Pieces from this period are becoming increasingly hard to come by. This vase is glazed in a wonderful deep green color, typical of the south of France.
The vase is in overall good vintage condition. It has no cracks, no chips or repairs. It has some minor signs of wear consistent with use and age: a very small imperfection in the glaze on the bottom edge and some crazing in the glaze (see photos).
