About

This gorgeous and unusual vase is handmade by artist Elyse Graham in her Los Angeles studio. It was featured in the September 2016 issue of House Beautiful magazine and is now available in a limited edition.

This collection of vessels is inspired by striated landscapes caused by glacial erosion as well as the beautiful colors found in layered metamorphic rock.

The artist is best known for her striking color palette and proclivity for layering hues to create surprising juxtapositions of color.

Though often thought to be either ceramic or glass, these pieces are neither. Graham has designed a unique process for creating these pieces. Each Drip vase is hand-cast with hydrocal plaster inside of a unique balloon shape. The interior of each piece is poured with layers of resin, making it waterproof. Finally, each Drip vase is hand-dyed by the artist with layer after layer of custom mixed pigments and then sealed with a UV resistant acrylic coating.

About the Maker

Founded in 2014 and based in Los Angeles, the Elyse Graham studio is a place where unusual materials and experimental processes are implemented to create a melding of art and object. We design by making--with a sense of curiosity, wonder and joy. We design and produce every piece by hand in our Los Angeles studio. The work is driven by the processes Graham develops for the very specific materials she uses, most notably plaster and resin. Our one of a kind Drip Vases are created with a process Graham designed to cast plaster inside of a flexible latex balloon mold. The interiors of the vessels are then sealed with layers of poured resin, making them functional pieces. Graham has also created a technique for dying the plaster exterior of the vases. Each piece is hand dip-dyed, layer by layer, and then sealed with a protective coating. This series of vessels, dyed in muted earth tones, is inspired by glacial erosion, layered metamorphic rock, and the magnificent coastal landscapes of the artist's native California.
