About the Item

A large and impressive pair English Torquay art pottery three handled vases decorated with pheasants by Longpark pottery and dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. Established in 1880 Longpark was a significant pottery in the Torquay potteries area. Utilising local red terracotta clays in the early years the pottery became known for its hand-painted wares. Slip -decorated wares were influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement and they produced pieces applied with Pheasants in various forms as well as using a Cockerel and Kingfisher design. Longpark was taken over by Watcombe and closed in 1957 and good examples are now sought after by collectors. This pair of distinctive vases are decorated with the pheasant pattern and made in the red terracotta clay as used in the earliest years. The vases are of tall bulbous form with a pinched neck and wide opening. Three looped handles, reflecting the styles produced by CH Brannam and William Baron, are applied around the top of each vase. The vases have round flat unglazed bases, and the bodies are decorated with pheasants in low relief within a continuous stylized landscape. The pheasants are hand-painted in naturalistic colors with a green and brown sponged effect to the landscape the scene set against a dark blue ground. The vases are typically not marked. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
