Arts & Crafts Crystalline Cerulean Vase by Adelaide Alsop Robineau
Located in Chicago, US
“A Robineau vase is a true work of art, unique in conception and perfect in execution, for every piece that left this studio was a labor of love.” – Ethel Brand Wise, The American Magazine of Art, 1929 Adelaide Alsop Robineau was a pioneer in American studio ceramics and excelled as an innovator in pottery both technically and aesthetically. As a young woman of high society in the late Victorian era, she gained early accolades as a skilled watercolorist and china painter and taught for a time at St. Mary’s Hall in Minnesota. In 1899, she married Samuel E. Robineau, a French gentleman and collector of Chinese ceramics. He was deeply intrigued by her talent and steadfastly supported and encouraged her throughout her career. The couple collaborated to produce a popular and influential monthly journal together, Keramic Studio, and went on to build a studio on their property in Syracuse, New York, which they named Four Winds. Robineau would also go on to teach for many years at Syracuse University while creating her own work and raising three children. Early in her career, she studied at Alfred University under Charles Binns, who is widely considered to be the progenitor of contemporary studio ceramics in America. His program established a shift in the craft of ceramics as an academic pursuit, rather than one of apprenticeship. Pottery throwers and the artists who decorated the wares traditionally inhabited separate roles in ceramic manufacture, a practice common in Europe. Binns’ philosophy merged the two, such that the potter had total agency of the final product. This marked a historic divergence in the creation of art pottery – one that Adelaide Robineau...

Large Arts Nouveau Elvir Otto "Brittany Farmers" Amphora Pottery Vase, 1910
Located in Big Flats, NY
A large and rare faience Art Nouveau Austrian Elvir Otto for Amphora Templitz (Reissner, Stellmacher & Kessel) pottery vase of the "Brittany Farmers" collection (1909-1910, inspired by the Brittany farm life, North West France) offers oversized and flared cylindrical form with high relief scenic landscape having farmer and crop fields, iridescent matte glazing with soft gilding, marked on base with Aphora, Austria and crown stamps as photographed, c1920 Measures - 16.5''H x 7.5''W x 7.5''D Additional Information: This large vase is made by Amphora, Turn-Teplitz Region of Bohemia Austria and was designed by Elvir Otto who worked for the Amphora works around 1909. This series is inspired by the Brittany (North West France) farm life. The decor is in high relief and colored in earthen tintes. Manufacturer Amphora Eduard Stellmacher and the brothers Hans and Carl RieÃYner lead together with Rudolf Kessler the company, which was grounded in 1892. They were specialized in unique styles and interesting glazes used to create what became known as Amphora pottery. They manufactured special luxury porcelain pieces, since 1894 also porcelain figurines and since 1895 fayences (vases and jardinières), and later special vases with animal motives and figurines. Animal figures, modern pottery with floral ornaments, china, stoneware and ivory-porcelain, decorated with enamel, soft colours and also gilded. Amphora AUSTRIA strongly competed with Royal Dux for the best ceramics of that time. In 1905 Stellmacher left the company and Kessel left in 1910 so the brothers continued the Amphora WERKE RIESSNER from that moment.Amphora represented at several exhibitions: 1893 in Chicago, the Highest Award, 1894 in San Francisco / Gold Medal, 1894 in Antwerpen âe" Diplome d`honneur, since 1897-9 8 winter exhibitions of the Vienna museum, 1900 in Paris âe" Medaille d`or, 1901 in St. Petersburg âe" Gold Medal, 1906 in Milan, and 1910 the world exhibition in Brüssel âe" Grand Prix.
