A mid 19th century French Cranberry glass and gilt bronze mounted cornucopia

About the Item

A mid 19th century cranberry or ruby glass, gilt bronze and marble mounted cornucopia. This stylish chimney ornament has a cranberry cornucopia of trumpet shape which has a flared rim with shaped lapet decoration finishing in points. The gilt bronze terminus is charmingly modelled as a hand with a fancy cuff and these are both contrasted by the white marble of the Carrara base. These 19th century cornucopia make stylish and quirky additions to a mantel shelf or table scape and were popular decorative accents in the second half of the 20th century. They can be found in a variety of different coloured glass and with differing styles of terminus from animal heads to more stylised scroll forms. They looked particularly effective when grouped together with contrasting examples. This example is in fine condition with original gilding to the gilt bronze element. There are minor nibbles to the tips of small points on the lapels of the cornucopia and on the edges of the marble. The measurements are 19cm wide, 13cm deep, 15.5cm high.
