Mid-Century Italian Studio Ceramic Vase with Applied Relief Figures

About the Item

A striking mid-century Italian studio ceramic vase featuring applied relief figures and distinctive rounded accents. This cylindrical vessel is glazed in a rich black, providing a dramatic contrast to four raised figural motifs in vibrant tones of red, yellow, green, and blue. The figures, which appear to reference folkloric or narrative themes, are arranged around the vase’s body, lending it a sculptural and storytelling presence. The base of the vase is marked “Italy,” confirming its origin. Seven rounded protrusions circle the lower portion, adding to its tactile and sculptural appeal. Likely dating to the 1950s–1960s, the piece is reminiscent of Italian studio potters such as Marcello Fantoni and Guido Gambone, though the specific maker is unknown.

Unusual vintage majolica vase with complex glaze in dark Bordeau oxblood red and various shades of grey colors features bands of applied reliefs in shape of abstract, graphic flowers. Top and bottom parts of the vase and bands of relief decor are decorated with gold. Monochromatic white glaze was used on inner surfaces, accentuating the palest grey shades in the main glaze. The vase is signed on the bottom with model number and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual the manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glaze that was used for this series is well documented to Fratelli Fanciullacci. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio tame" for "distributor name" if the distributor did not object. Pieces from this particular series were made by Fratelli Fanciullacci with their own mark, for Ebeling Reuss...
