The history from a company focusing on household goods to art ceramic is old. Søholm Keramik (Ceramics), Denmark was founded by Edvard Christian Sonne and Herman Sonne Wolffsen in 1835. The original production was focusing on useful pottery plates, bowls and flasks among other items. Yet as the demand for these goods fell after the second world war, they now started to focus more and more on interior design and decoration objects. Soon they were producing a variety of pottery such as vases, lamps and wall hangings. Soon they became one of Denmark’s leading manufacturers of modern ceramics both in household goods and art and design pottery. By the 1930’s Michael Andersen and Sons of Ronne on the island of Bornholm was headed by brothers Daniel and Michael who developed the company immensely and contributed to their world-wide success . Other famous designers worth mentioning are: Marianne Starck, she was a German-born artist and became one of Denmark’s leading ceramic designers in the 20th century. She is most known for her time with the ”Michael Andersen & Son” factory. Marianne's artistry is represented at numerous museums in the Nordic countries. Svend Aage Jensen, who often used the sgraffito technique and is often referred to as a master in glazes. He worked for Soholm until the 1980s and developed many of their famous designs. Noomi Backhausen, worked from the 60s until 1990.
