Art and design glass from Flygsfors, where innovation meets skilled craftsmanship. Flygsfors history; from household production to design and art glass Flygsfors became synonymy with bold art and design glass from the 1950s and onwards. Very much due to Paul Kedelv and Helena Tynell, both innovative designers in their own right. Paul Kedelv designed and developed shell glass also known as the coquille glass, a form of sommerso technique often using streamlined or organic shapes in the design with bold colors in his art glass, which is what the company became famed from. Coquille glass became very sought after in various forms mid-century modern interior design and decoration and has had a revival in the last few years, when more and more people appreciate and value both the skilled craftmanship as well as outstanding design that is so typical for glass from Flygsfors. Helena Tynell one of Finland’s most valued glass designers also made some iconic glass designs for the firm. She had often a more sober silhouette in her design with stricter lines. Her glass design is often more textured and with extravagant colors making them very distinct and stunning. After Paul Kedelv left as the head designer his position was taken by Wiktor Brandt, his design concept was more focusing on clean lines, but with bold colors and unexpected combinations such as a fusion of glass and metal. The history of Flygsfors is very old The glass production started in Flygsfors; Sweden by Otto Hammargren in 1863, yet then it was used as a hammer forge. With worse economic conditions for the small Småland ironworks, the Flygsfors glass factory was started in 1888. In 1930 after a renewal of the company by Gustav and Oskar Rosander who took over the mill. During the first 30 years, only window glass was produced, but they later switched to lighting glass and decorative glass. Production steadily improved; in the 1950s, the mill was Europe's largest manufacturer of lighting glass and had approximately 200 employees. It was active until 1979 and is perhaps best known now for its colorful art and design glass with streamlined shapes.
