About the Item
This massive hollow vessel has been turned from a 180 years old cypress. A landslide caused by floods brought it to its demise in 2014. The massiveness of the tree and the location discouraged its removal for nearly 3 years. Even so, rot would not occur, the sun would not crack through the fibres, neither a chainsaw would sever through it for the sand embedded and stones inclusions. Imposing myself would have stretched the distance between the medium and me, I rather looked for a dialog with its uniqueness. Upon roughing a graceful silhouette on a wood lathe, the exterior was textured, scorched by fire, washed with iron oxides and sealed with shellac to resemble a massive iron receptacle exposed to the elements. The interior has maintained the original wood grain as a statement of the resilience of the tree.

Atelier Lorenzo Franceschinis
Lorenzo Franceschinis, born in Friuli in the north east of Italy, returned to his homeland in 2010 after spending several years abroad working to pursue his lifelong affair with woodworking. A believer in genuine craftsmanship, Franceschinis has focused on developing his skills ever since. Today his natural attitude towards innovation has advanced beyond traditional woodworking, where the soul of wood is often sacrificed in the name of serial production. The Franceschinis approach to woodturning is driven by a curiosity for established technique. Self taught and meticulous, Franceschinis has studied the behavior of wood in a quest to identify its raw state to highlight its defects and bring out its intrinsic beauty. What emerges out of this designer’s hands is not simply the result of his talent and relationship with the medium, but also the phenomena that have marked the living tree throughout history. -“Count the growth rings on a piece of wood, that will tell you how long it has taken to produce it. Single out a line and wonder what happened. Wood never lies, it’s an impartial witness of time. I believe in making people aware of the beauty that surrounds them, it is one of the most valuable forms of education in an globalised economy that defines the value of anything by price tags.” Franceschinis shows total respect for nature and sources material only from trees that have been felled for reasons other than his work.

Wood-Fired Ceramic Vase by Paul Chaleff
By Paul Chaleff
Located in Atlanta, GA
A stoneware vase by Paul Chaleff (1947-) made in 1984. Chaleff is known for his wood fired ceramic vessel without glaze or sometimes natural ash glaze. The vase on offer is of a highly geometrical form with handcut multifaceted lower body that rises and morphs into a rounded upper body with two hand-molded ears above the shoulder. The surface shows nice firing color variations due to the iron oxidation in the kiln and also carved lines left intentionally by the artist. It is marked with the artist's incised signature and date 84. This piece has a very strong Japanese wabi-sabi appeal which is the aesthetic influence of the artist's work and makes a visually arresting center piece for any interior.
"Paul Chaleff is known for his large-scale wood fired ceramic sculptures and vessels. He also created a large body of wheel thrown functional vessels. His vessels are strongly influenced by Japanese pottery, especially the work of one of Japan’s National Living Treasures, Takeshi Nakazato. Chaleff was one of the first American potters using a Japanese style Anagama kiln and became a leader in the introduction of this form of wood-burning kiln.
In 1989, he began a regular collaboration with the British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro. Over a period of thirteen years, they created nearly 50 works, both figurative and abstract. Caro’s sculpture has had direct influence on Chaleff’s work as has the sculpture of Isamu Noguchi, and the ceramics of John Mason...
