Monart Scottish Art Deco Large Orange & Brown Art Glass Vase
About the Item
A large and stunning Scottish Art Deco Monart art glass vase in orange with brown designs speckle and created by Salvador and Paul Ysart and probably dating between 1925 and 1930.
Salvador Ysart moved to Scotland from France in 1915 following the outbreak of WWI. Having followed a glass blowing career abroad he joined Moncrieff’s North British Glassworks in Perth in 1922 along with his son Paul. While the glassworks had focused on crystal cut glass the market was suffering. Salvador developed and produced a new range titled ‘Monart Ware’ and together with his son Paul went into production in 1924. A variety of shaped vases was made in a wide range of colorways with growth in popularity and even being retailed in London at Liberty’s.
This example is of round bulbous shape with a pinched neck and trumpet shaped flared rim referred to as shape RA. The vase is blown in brown over an orange speckled design incorporating gold speckling (aventrine). The base has a flat polished ring foot rim with a central round shaped and polished pontil. The vase is typically not marked.
Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market.
In very good condition with customary wear to the base associated with age and use.
