About the Item

The piece explores themes of identity, internal conflict, and escape from society, reflecting the story of Y., a hybrid creature consisting of a lion, a goat, and a snake. It serves as an allegory for how mental health conditions can fracture one’s identity, giving rise to divided personalities as a response to trauma. "The pieces are part of my project ‘MMXV Bestiary’ exploring monstrosity amid Greece’s post-2008 financial crisis, highlighting the resulting impact of violence, poverty, and youth unemployment. Drawing from personal experiences, I wrote semi-fictional stories that merge mental health struggles and substance abuse with ancient myths of innocents cursed into monsters. The mythical creatures are entangled with their modern counterparts, bound by unjust social contracts." -Niki Danai The monster with the many heads was part of the performance Exhibition "The Theater of Things" the show transformed the gallery into a domestic stage — an ever-evolving space shaped by the creative voices of seven designers. Each night, one of them slept in the space. Each morning, a journalist, curator, or critic joined for coffee and conversation — exploring what it means to live among collectible pieces. Inspired by radical gestures like Gianni Pettena’s La Casa all’Elba and Joseph Beuys’ Coyote performance, the exhibition is both lived experience and open dialogue. Unique piece.
