About the Item
This palatial hand-painted ceramic vase, by Narbon D. Honore Delphin Massier (1836–1907)
of Vallauris, is a striking example of late 19th-century French art pottery.
The monumental size and panoramic landscape scene set this vase apart from the more typical, moderately sized vases and wall pockets. Large planters and jardinières exist in his oeuvre, but a vase of this scale with such an expansive landscape is rare and considered a major work. The vase features an expansive depiction of a tranquil pastoral forest with two grazing deer where lush meadows, a profusion of autumn leaves and birch trees are rendered in vivid detail. Delicate leafage and lichen are interwoven throughout the scene, adding a sense of seasonal renewal and poetic beauty. The composition evokes a serene, almost dreamlike landscape, celebrating both the richness of nature and the artistry of the ceramicist.
Delphin Massier (1836–1907)
Delphin Massier was a prominent member of the renowned Massier family of ceramists from Vallauris, France—a dynasty that played a pivotal role in the evolution of French decorative ceramics from the 18th through the early 20th centuries. After inheriting his share of the family business in 1871, Delphin specialized in polychrome enameled faience and majolica, often destined for both home and garden. He was known for his innovative glazing techniques, including the mastery of metallic luster and iridescent finishes, and for his ability to blend naturalistic motifs with the prevailing artistic movements of his time, such as Art Nouveau and Orientalism.
Delphin Massier’s works are celebrated for their colors, technical innovation, and the seamless integration of botanical and animal forms. His pieces, often signed and marked with “Delphin Massier Vallauris,” are highly sought after by collectors and are considered emblematic of the creative revival that defined Vallauris ceramics in the late 19th century.
