About the Item

Origin Vallauris, France, circa 1980s Materials Hand-painted glazed ceramic Condition Very good vintage condition, consistent with age A striking tall ceramic vase by Monique Brunner, crafted in Vallauris, the famed center of French ceramic artistry. Entirely hand-painted, the surface unfolds with a dynamic underwater tableau rendered in Brunner’s unmistakable modernist style. Swirling forms evoke fantastical marine creatures and abstract sea flora, brought to life in a bold palette of fiery reds, deep blacks, and lavender-blue glazes, accented with shimmering touches of gold. The expressive brushwork and vibrant contrasts lend the piece a sculptural presence, transforming a functional vessel into a work of decorative art. Signed “Vallauris M.P.” on the base, the vase exemplifies Brunner’s unique contribution to the Vallauris tradition, where Mediterranean themes and postwar experimentation merged to produce some of the most inventive ceramics of the 20th century. Both dramatic and whimsical, this vase makes a statement as a standalone centerpiece or as part of a curated collection of Vallauris ceramics.
