About the Item

striking and sculptural pair of hand-thrown vases in the classic Yuhuchun shape, each decorated with raised, applied fish in dynamic relief. Rendered in underglaze cobalt blue with accents of iron oxide brown, the fish vary in position and posture as they circle the form—creating a sense of movement and rhythm as the eye travels around each piece. In Chinese art, the fish (yu) is a longstanding symbol of abundance, prosperity, and harmony. Often associated with flowing water and good fortune, the fish brings both auspicious meaning and visual vitality to these vessels. Each fish is modeled with care, slightly different from the next, contributing to a lively, hand-sculpted quality that distinguishes them from more commercial wares. The Yuhuchun form—graceful and time-honored, with its rounded shoulders, tapering neck, and flared lip—has its origins in classical Chinese ceramics of the Tang and Song dynasties. These mid–late 20th century interpretations pay homage to that lineage while adding a layer of playful ornamentation through the raised decoration. As with most handmade work, the vases are slightly different in scale: The smaller measures 8.25" in diameter and 15.75" in height The larger measures 9" in diameter and 16.5" in height Their subtle asymmetry is part of the charm—offering balance without uniformity. Ideal as a statement pair on a console, flanking a fireplace, or anchoring a sculptural tablescape.
