About the Item

Pair of late 19th-century Art Nouveau patinated bronze vases with children fishing by Austrian author Ignar Mansch, France By: Ignar Mansch Material: bronze, copper, tin, metal Technique: cast, molded, metalwork, patinated Dimensions: 6.75 in x 14.25 in Date: late 19th century Style: Art Nouveau, Belle Époque Place of origin: France Two patinated bronze vases crafted in France in the late 19th century, created by Austrian artist Ignar Mansch, embody the poetic naturalism characteristic of the Art Nouveau period. The design merges sculptural form and utility, with the vessel’s undulating silhouette evoking organic movement. Around the rounded base, a group of children is depicted fishing with their hands, their bodies intertwined in playful motion as they lean toward the surface. One child clutches a fish, while others reach into the swirling aquatic reliefs that animate the base, where fish and flowing lines seem to merge with the bronze itself. The elongated neck, shaped like a hollowed tree trunk, continues this organic rhythm, blending seamlessly into the naturalistic handle. The bronze’s warm patina enhances the modeling and depth of the figures, emphasizing the unity between form and subject. On the side of each vase, the artist’s signature and place of origin are finely inscribed.
