About the Item

Pair of oval, porcelain vases, decorated on one side with multicolored bouquets in cartouches framed in gold. The base and the neck are accented with rinceaux, scrollwork, and a latticework pattern painted in gold on a midnight blue background. Each vase has two short handles that are sculpted with leaves and accented with gold. Very good condition. The Bayeux porcelain factory was founded by Joachim Langlois in 1812. In 1824, with the objective of conquering the Parisian market, Langlois opened a depot in Paris. In the 1920’s, the reputation of Bayeux porcelain expanded far beyond France to Russia and the United States. Soon the fame of their porcelain touched the highest levels of society and in 1828, the Duchess of Berry and numerous other personalities made it a point to visit the Paris boutique and make significant purchases. Upon his death in 1830, Langlois left the factory at its height, employing nearly 150 people. It was his widow, Marie-Jeanne le Cavélier, who took up the management of the business. New productions were officially unveiled for the first time in 1834, at the Grande Exposition Nationale in Paris. The company was rewarded with a bronze medal at the Exposition. Langlois’ two daughters, Jeanne and Sophie, took up its management in 1847, and ran the company for two years before selling it to François Gosse in 1849. In order to compete with the Parisian porcelain manufacturers, he reduced deluxe productions such as these and limited production to simpler decorations and a few Japanese and Chinese imitations. In doing so he relaunched production, which was amply rewarded during the Universal Expositions in New York (1853), Brussels (1857), London (gold, 1862), and Paris (1867). Despite everything, François Gosse’s death in 1870 marked the beginning of difficulties, and his widow found it necessary to resell the business in 1878 to Jules Morlent.
