Pair Of 19th Century French Gilt-Bronze Mounted Sèvres-Style Porcelain Vases

About the Item

A stunning pair of ormolu mounted Sèvres style porcelain vases and covers, made in France in the late nineteenth century in superb Sèvres style. With gilt pinecone finials and covers, these pieces are lavishly decorated and richly adorned with gilding against a ‘bleu celeste’ turquoise background. Each of elongated baluster form, painted in the manner of Boucher with a gentleman and companion reading a love letter before a ruin, the reverse with a wooded pond scene, a cottage in the distance, the cover, neck and foot enriched with gilt scrollwork. each signed "G.Poitevin". Circa 1890 French Dimensions: High 65.9 cm ; W: 21 cm ; D: 16 cm ; Bases 12.5 cm x 12.5 cm Footnote: Georges Émile Poitevin, born in Paris, is recorded as exhibiting many subjects on porcelain at the Paris Salons of the 1870s and early 1880s. Literature: See W. Neuwirth, 'Porzellanmaler-Lexikon, 1840-1914', Band II, p.163-4 for a listing of three painters with the surname Poitevin, noted as working in Paris studios in the late nineteenth century. These entries are accompanied by illustrations of vases painted in a similar manner.
