pair of amphorae Sevres hand painted porcelain with champlevé Origin France

About the Item

A pair of amphorae Sevres hand-painted porcelain with champlevé glaze Origin France perfect condition. The Manufacture nationale de Sèvres is one of the most important and well-known European madame-de-pompadour porcelain factories in Europe. It is founded in the city of Vincennes in 1740 with the support of Louis XV and especially with the help of Madame de Pompadour. Let us not forget that the latter favored other cultural projects such as Diderot's Encyclopédie. The city of Sèvres will finally be decided, due to its proximity to Bellevue Castle, owned by Madame de Pompadour. A new factory of about 130 square meters and 4 floors is built between 1753 and 1756 by the architect Laurent Lindet. The most significant event for the Sèvres manufacture is in 1768 with the discovery by Pierre-Joseph Macquer and Robert Millon of a kaolin deposit near the city of Limoges. This revolutionizes the manufacture being able to make authentic porcelain pieces. Porcelain paste is a mixture of kaolin, quartz and feldspath. While the kaolin must be dissolved very well so that no impurities remain, the quartz and feldspath must be reduced to powder. The three elements are mixed to obtain a liquid paste. Sèvres stood out for the introduction of gold and for backgrounds with special shades, among which dark blue, turquoise, jonquil yellow and pea green prevailed. They also created what they named the Pompadour rose, in honor of Madame de Pompadour.
