Pair of Chinese Baluster Vases in Nanjing Crackle Glaze

About the Item

A pair of large ceramic Chinese crackle glaze baluster vases, commonly known as 'Nanjing' porcelain. Dating from the 19th century, these elegant polychrome enamelled vases are decorated on their lower half with traditional scenes of jousting, combat and warrior games on foot and on horseback. The upper sections depict dignitaries and army chiefs, flanked by dragons and Buddhist lions in relief. The vases are signed on the base, and one has a small chip to the rim, which has been repaired.
