Pair of Globular Form Flambe Vases by Palin Thorley

About the Item

Rare pair of Flambe pots by J. Palin Thorley, hand signed on bottom with sequential numbering. Interesting that these were found at 2 different places over a period of 5 years. These were test pots to experiment different glaze combinations on and the numbers were to keep track of what each combination was. These weren't a production piece and were more art pottery, which is unusual for Palin Thorley. His ancestors on both sides had worked in the ceramic industry for generations in England before immigrating to the United States. He worked for wedgwood for 14 years from age 14 to 27 and then he left and worked as Art Director and Manager at several Potteries in Staffordshire. In 1927 Thorley and his wife immigrated to the United States to Ohio where he worked doe the Hall China Company and Taylor & Smithm. He received acclaimed the industry and an Honorary Degree from West Virginia University. In 1929 a magazine described him as "an internationally known ceramicist and Director of the University of Pittsburgh Ceramics Department." Thorley ties to Colonial Williamsburg began in 1937 when the cities restoration was under way. Shown some shards of an antique piece Thorley quickly said I can make thay. He ran a studio and supplied The Craft House Museum Shop and made reproductions from Colonial Williamsburg's collection. In his later years he experimented and produced many intriguing glazes. Such as Lusterware, Crystalline and Flambe. When Queen Elizabeth II visted Jamestown in 1957 for the 350th anniversary of the founding of the settlement, they passed his studio and she recognized the name and made them stop abd she ordered a full service of China from him to be shipped back to England.
