Pair of Japanese Meiji Period Fukagawa Koransha Porcelain Vases, circa 1875

About the Item

Extraordinary rare Japanese Meiji Period pair of gilded and hand painted porcelain vases in vivid green, red, blue and pink on a stunningly shaped fine porcelain body. The mark depicts the Koransha orchid in red and is signed “Fukugawa Sei” indicating that it was produced in the well beloved and respected kiln of the Koransha company. Fukugawa Eizaemon, was the founder of Koransha company in Arita. The cobalt blue cartouche framing the two panels is characteristic of Meiji Imari vases. The area outside the panels is decorated with a stunning intricate geometric pattern. The deep red expression is particularly impressive. The two panels showcase birds in flight and resting on branches. They also depict pine, plum blossoms, and bamboo motif, which is called "Sho-Chiku-Bai" or "Three Friends of Winter", on a white background. The pine branches are symmetrically positioned to match European tastes. The stunning two panels in white background connecting the two main panels, depict red plum tree motif and phoenix flying freely with golden clouds surrounding them. The top part of the vase with stunning details is adorned with two shishi lions holding a ring in their mouths. The late father of the collector of this exquisite pair, who operated one of the leading kilns in the historic Imari-Arita region of Japan, travelled extensively to Europe in the early 1960s with a mission that he led, to purchase and bring back to Japan antique ceramics that had been exported from Japan to the west over the past 250 years. A total of 104 pieces were acquired and brought back. These were very unique pieces, designed and produced to export to Europe and later to America too, mostly in the 18th up to very early 20th century. These were carefully studied and extensively copied in the hope of creating products that conformed with the long-standing tastes and preferences in the west and bringing back the glory of that era. He concentrated on purchasing massive masterpieces that originated from his region of Imari-Arita. Records show that the mission did a considerable portion of its buying in London. All the 104 pieces have been in his museum quality private collection. This pair of Meiji porcelain vases is among these 104 exceptional and unique pieces. Dimensions: H 9.5 in D 7.5 in.

A striking blue and white vase from the studio of Japanese Potter Makuzu Kozan, also known as Miyagawa Kozan (1842–1916), one of the most established and collected ceramist from Meiji Period. Born as Miyagawa Toranosuke, Kozan established his pottery studio in Yokohama circa 1870s and later became one of the appointed artists to the Japanese Imperial household. His work was exhibited in many international fairs that the Meiji government participated at the turn of the century and won many grand prizes. Of a relatively large size, this vase is decorated with underglaze cobalt blue using the novel technique developed by Kozan called Fuki-e (the blow painting). As a result, the bamboos appear took on a three-dimensional quality as if appearing in a mist. Known as one of the most creative ceramists, circa 1887, Kozan started experimenting with new chemical colors from the West in the format of his porcelain glaze. New colors allowed him to create underglaze design that appeared bright, smooth and glossy. He even invented his own receipt of cobalt blue to achieve a much brighter yet softer shade, as evident on this vase.
