These stunning vases are made from lapis lazuli and ormolu: an exceptional and precious combination of materials, appropriate for the superb design by the Russian maker Galberg, which is known from a variety of famous examples, including the monumental vase in the Grand Reception Hall of Windsor Castle.
They are in Campana form, in the so called 'Medici Vase' design: bell-shaped bodies which are reminiscent of Ancient Classical vases, especially calyx kraters. They are adorned with a bands of ormolu rings and friezes towards the base, are gadrooned, and lined with a radiant gilt-bronze interior.
The combination of lapis lazuli and ormolu, but exceptionally precious is outstanding; in this particular pair the wonderful golden glimmers within the blue stone match the luxurious gilt-bronze mounts. Of French twentieth century craftsmanship, these fine vases perfectly encapsulate the regal feel of late Imperial Russia, from where the design came.
