Pair of Large Ornamental Vases

This is one of the famous vases designed by Giovan Battista Piranesi 1720-1778.
You will find it in the book dedicated to Piranesi, Taschen collection, p.614.
The Roman vase "Adrianea" was discovered in 1770, in the small lake called Pantanello inside Villa Adriana in Tivoli.
The same was designed by Piranesi shortly before his death.
At the foot of the press, Giovanni Piranesi wrote:
To his Excellency Mr. Cav. Hamilton Plenipotentiary Minister of the Majesty of King George III of Great Britain to the Majesty of Ferdinand IV, King of the Two Sicilies, lover of the Fine Arts.

Perspective view of a large marble vase, found in 1770 while excavating and drying up the lake known as Pantanello, a place located in the enclosure of Villa Adriana near Tivoli two miles. Both its invention and its well-understood sculptures demonstrate the perfection of the arts of the age of Hadrian. The inscription that can be read on its modern pedestal, also in marble, indicates the personage who took care of having this monument restored.
