PAIR of Large Pottery 15 Inch Vases by Bretby Oriental Scenes,English Circa 1914

$1,155.51per set

About

These are a very decorative and unusual PAIR of Large Earthenware Vases with oriental figure scenes, made by Bretby Ceramics, England, Circa 1914. The vases are 15 inches tall and are hexagonal in profile, featuring scenes of crane birds, and hunters, observed by oriental ladies (Japanese geishas?) from their balcony. There is a key border pattern to the neck and a motif pattern to the base rim. The decoration is relief moulded with the base colour being a creamy light buff of varying shades with hand applied browns and darker browns to black. The manufacturer of Bretby art pottery, was Tooth and Company Ltd of Derbyshire, England who specialized in earthen-wares, producing Art Noveau and Oriental style art pottery until 1918. Both vases are fully marked on the base with the impressed Bretby name, sunburst logo, No. 2270 which is probably a pattern number and a registered design no: 630637, which dates these vases to 1914.
