Rare Jar of Japan in the 1500s / Bizen Ware / Wabi-Sabi Jar/Natural Glaze Vase

About the Item

Bizen is a pottery located in Okayama Prefecture. (Bizen kilns are marked with red circles on the map.) It is one of the oldest pottery in Japan. The beautiful color that comes out when baked in the kiln is attractive. The Japanese have long admired this kind of accidental beauty. Bizen ware is basically unglazed. One of the attractions is the natural glaze that appears when fired in a kiln (straw ash melts into the glaze). Because natural glaze hangs beautifully. And this is a Bizen ware pot that was fired in the Muromachi period (1500s). Older than the Edo period. A container for storing plant seeds. One of the characteristics of this pot is that it has a slightly greenish natural glaze, and the natural glaze is burnt and bald in some areas. This baldness is a unique feature of Bizen ware. The baked color and natural glaze are very nice, and it is beautiful even when viewed from a 360° angle. Also, I put about 1/3 of water in it and left it for a day, but there was no water leakage. You can put flowers directly into it for decoration. Good condition. In addition, a carved seal of "?" is carved around the shoulder of the main body. This is a mark made by various potters in a communal kiln at the time to determine which pots they made. This triangular inscription is unique to this period and is one of the evidences that it was made in the 1500s. not a scratch. I highly recommend this jar. Weight: 5.6 kg.
