Japanese antique pottery vase/14th-15th century/Tokoname ware/Wabi-Sabi

About the Item

It is a very old jar in Japan. This is a pottery called Tokoname ware. Tokoname is a kiln located in Aichi prefecture, Japan.(Tokoname Kiln is marked with a red circle on the map.) It is said to have originated around the 12th century. Also, in Japan, there are 6 kilns with a long history that are still going on. It is one of them. This is a jar made around the Muromachi period (1338-1400s). The Muromachi period is older than the Edo period. Tokoname ware is a childish product and its products are distributed all over Japan. Most Tokoname ware is baked in brownish color and has a glossy surface due to natural healing. However, this vase may have been placed in a place where the firing temperature was low, and by chance it did not have a natural glaze, resulting in a light-colored earthenware-like finish. There are pattern-like marks on the surface, but these are marks from hitting with a mallet. The tip of the mallet is bellows-shaped, resulting in this pattern. This is thought to be to remove air from the soil and increase its density. In the method of making pots from this era, it was rare to leave the hammered pattern intact. Therefore, the surface of this vase is varied and beautiful. As this is an excavated item, the tip is missing. However, its defects are also beautiful. There is a crack at the tip. There are also traces of broken pottery pieces glued together on the body. Don't worry, you don't have to worry about it breaking. Please see detailed images. This is a simple pot with a wabi-sabi feel that is rare for Tokoname ware. Why not try displaying it in your room? Weight: 4.15kg "Note" However, it is a very old item. If you fill it with water, it will leak from the bottom, so if you want to display flowers, fill another container with water and put it inside the jar.
