Rare monumental brutalist vase in sandstone from La Borne, France 1970

About the Item

Large free-form sandstone vase with sun decoration. From La Borne, France. height 42cm, very good condition. 1970s. The origins of Bornoise pottery La Borne is a hamlet located in the communes of Henrichemont and Morogues in the Cher department. A pottery activity has been attested in this territory since the 13th century. However, it was not until the 15th century that potters mastered the cooking techniques to cook the local clay, a stoneware earth, at 1280°C. At this temperature, the earth becomes watertight. La Borne experienced its golden age in the 19th century. 21 workshops made up of the master potter, turners and laborers run the “shops” (term designating the potter’s workshop). The large recumbent ovens are operated in common. Salting tubs, terrines, milk jugs, chimney pots, etc. are marketed in the great center-west of France. In the middle of the 20th century, this traditional pottery went into decline, competing with other materials or no longer corresponding to the tastes of the population. But at this time, when the other pottery villages in France disappeared, La Borne experienced a revival. Ceramic artists come to learn the secrets of the earth from the ancient potters. Among them: Jean and Jacqueline Lerat, André Rozay, Vassil Ivanoff. Thanks to traditional pottery and the successive generations from 1941 to the present day, ceramic creation in La Borne holds an important place in the contemporary landscape of national and international ceramics. There are around a hundred ceramists in La Borne and the surrounding area, they represent twelve different nationalities and their workshops are spread over fifteen surrounding municipalities. The international dimension has been one of the characteristics of the site for more than 50 years. The Céramique La Borne association currently has 62 ceramists and sculptors. In 1971, the Association des potiers de La Borne took over the former girls' school in the village to present their creations and those of guest artists. From 1992, ceramists and elected officials wanted to expand this establishment. After a long maturation, a new space opened to the public on April 10, 2010. The Community of communes of the Hautes Terres en Haut Berry was the contracting authority for this investment. This project was financially supported by the State, the Center Regional Council and the General Council of Cher. The La Borne Contemporary Ceramics Center now welcomes visitors to the former girls' school and a long glass gallery (665 m2), designed by architect Achim Von Meier, from the Die Werft Agency.
