Comfortably located between Sologne and Sancerrois, the small village of La Borne is an essential stopover for lovers of art, pottery, ceramics and nature. Enveloped by the forest and shared between the 2 vineyards of Menetou-Salon and Sancerre, this village of 200 souls, posted along the Route Jacques Cœur, makes us forget that we are only a stone's throw from the town of Bourges . Over time, La Borne took shape. Part of the former Sovereign Principality of Boisbelle landlocked in Berry, the hamlet of La Borne is ideally located in the heart of the forest on a major sandstone vein. Thanks to the exploitation of its natural resources and the assimilation of new cooking techniques at more than 1200°, it became an important place for the creation of pottery from the 15th century. Although this production was essentially practical and linked to the needs of rural life, it still included some elements of local popular culture and pottery began to become objects of art and collectors' items. A golden age, then a decline halted by Art. In the 19th century, we speak of a golden age in La Borne when the hamlet was home to prestigious ceramists such as Marie Talbot. Ovens and workshops are multiplying and the village will have more than 80 potters for 700 inhabitants. But the beginning of the 20th century saw the appearance of new materials and new needs that heavy, fragile or bulky pottery and ceramics found difficult to compete with or satisfy... A slow and painful decline then took place until half of the 20th century or unlike many other pottery villages in France, La Borne sees its streets repopulated with men and women determined to perpetuate the history of this pottery village by promoting their various artistic sensibilities. There is a second village of potters in the south of Berry: “Les Archers”. There are several craftsmen there as well as a Museum and a Pottery Market which takes place on the 3rd Sunday of June. A reach that has become international The figures of this revival are, among others, Jean and Jacqueline Lerat, André Rozay, Anne Kjaersgaard, Vassil Ivanoff and even Jean Linard. Around pottery and ceramics, its artists of various inspirations have managed to make this village an essential place where we like to come and see these artisans practicing their know-how directly in their workshops. You can also admire exhibitions of international scope, notably in the remarkable La Borne Contemporary Ceramic Center, a 665m² glass gallery, opened in 2010. We should also mention the Pottery Museum housed in the former Chapelle St -Jean-Baptiste or the Ivanoff Museum, named after the man considered “the first ceramic expressionist”. Finally, we strongly advise you to take a detour to Neuvy-Deux-Clochers to take a look at the incredible and unexpected Linard Cathedral.
