Restauration Opaline Glass Vases by Jean-Baptiste Desvignes

About the Item

Pair of white opaline glass vases decorated with gilded Gothic arcades and medieval figures playing music or dancing. Each vase rests on a square gilt bronze base embellished with foliage. This delicate decoration was produced by the Jean-Baptiste Desvignes studio, circa 1820 Dimensions: W 4.7 in, D 4.7i n, H 11.2 in. Dimensions: L 12cm, P 12cm, H 28.5cm. Literature To paint on opaline glass, the French painter Jean-Baptiste Desvignes (1786-1826) used only vegetable-based colors that he affixed to the opaline. The gilding dominated, using forms of linear palmettes, flowers, and garland patterns. Desvignes decorated in Gothic style as well as created small, illustrative scenes inspired by the fables of La Fontaine. The sets by Jean-Baptiste Desvignes ran from 1820 until approximately 1826. Afterward, his wife and his two collaborators, Vincent and Blancheron, continued using the same formulas and motifs to decorate opal that came primarily, it seems, from the Brecy crystal manufacturer, founded in 1827.
