Wonderful Royal Doulton character jug aka toby jug the clown D6322 with white hair and red ruffled collar. He is in fabulous vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or chiggers that we have found, circa 1951-1955. Toby jugs have been around since the early 18th century and although this guy is commonly called a Toby jug, he is not. This jaunty fellow is, actually, a Character jug. A Toby jug depicts a full body and head where a Character jug is just a bust or head. There is quite the distinction between jugs and mugs as well. A jug has a spout for pouring and a mug does not. So this is a character jug! Created by one of Royal Doulton’s most famous modelers, Harry Fenton, who was assistant to Charles J. Noke, the original art director at Royal Doulton when joining in the 1890s. Fenton adapted the original impressionistic style to a more realistic than stylized appearance for many of his pieces. Until the 1990s Fenton had been the most prolific modeler with 26 character jugs, 15 toby jugs and numerous other items. Fenton passed away in 1953 shortly after creating this iconic The Clown Character jug in 1951. You must make this clown character jug yours. The redoubtable British ceramics maker Royal Doulton has long embraced popular tastes and enjoys a devoted following among aficionados of English pottery. Some are drawn to the company’s intricately decorated bone china dinner services; others are passionate collectors of Royal Doulton’s artfully hand-painted vases, bowls and figurines.

When founded in 1815 in the Lambeth section of suburban London, Doulton & Co. produced bottles and other storage containers and even sewer pipes in stoneware, a cheap but durable cousin of porcelain. Amid the Victorian era’s rising concern for hygiene, food safety and sanitation, the company flourished. And in the late 1870s Doulton expanded its business into the applied arts.

The firm took over a factory in Staffordshire, in northern England — the traditional home of British ceramics manufacturing — to produce tableware. Around the same time, Doulton opened an art-pottery studio in Lambeth, where vases, urns and other forms were decorated with painted scenic images, flowers or historical motifs. Taking a cue from the venerable Meissen porcelain workshops in Germany, Doulton artisans began crafting figurines modeled on characters from literature and theater. The firm also helped popularize Toby Jugs and other “character mugs” — handled cups shaped as the heads of figures from folklore and popular culture. King Edward VII granted the company the Royal Warrant in 1901.
