About the Item

Floris Wubben, born in 1983, is a Dutch designer and ceramicist renowned for his unique fusion of functional design and experimental sculpture. Based in Haarlem, the Netherlands, he established his studio in 2009 after studying at the Faydherbe Academy in Mechelen (Belgium) and furthering his training in Germany. Wubben is best known for crafting one-of-a-kind pieces using self-built machines—such as presses, extruders, and hammers—that allow him to blur the line between human craftsmanship and mechanical production. The pressure and friction generated during the extrusion process cause the clay to crack—a feature that Floris Wubben embraces as part of his design approach. This technique gave rise to the Saw Collection, a series of stoneware lamps, vases, and wall sculptures. These sharp and whimsical forms are finished with a lavish glaze just before firing, creating a striking contrast between their jagged edges and smooth surfaces. Each piece created in his studio bears distinct traces of this hybrid process. His objects often explore unpredictability and irregularity, embracing imperfections as a reflection of nature and process. Series like Pressed Project, Hammered Bowls, and Ceramic Current highlight his innovative approach. Notably, Ceramic Current was developed during a residency in Arita, Japan, where Wubben experimented with porcelain to produce organic, dripping forms that challenge traditional ceramics.

Unique Green Ceramic Vase by Turi Heisselberg Pedersen
By Turi Heisselberg Pedersen
Located in New York, NY
Organic Vase, 2015, (Ceramic, C. 12.1 in. h x 7.5 in. d, Object No.: 3389). Turi Heisselberg Pedersen has, all through her career, strived to develop the vessel as abstract form and as an independent sculptural object. As Turi notes “working in clay is to me connected with many underlying cultural bound references, but also strongly connected to nature. The very process of building in clay is a process from nature to culture. We have an inherent understanding of beauty and design evolved in thousands of years of visual impressions from our cultural history, but especially also from nature. In this context, I am aiming to create a visual and emotional reading of the objects, working with shape, rhythm, volume, movement, and texture”. In the interplay between culture and nature, Turi’s works are inspired by geological structures and crystal formations, but also by architecture, the edged rendering of a computer drawing or folded paper shapes. Most of her faceted shapes seem to have a seed of coincidence or unplanned development, reminding one of crystal formations growing in irregular clusters.? Heisselberg Pedersen’s sculptures are hand-modeled from stoneware and glazed with slip-glazes, which gives the works a stone-like, dry surface with a rich texture. Some of Turi’s designs...
