About the Item

An icon among mid-century modern ceramics: a small "eared" vase ("oreilles" in French) by the famous French ceramist Roger Capron (1922-2006) active in the Vallauris area in the 1950/60/70s. This specific model was created in the 1950s and has become one of his most appreciated creations for collectors of mid-century ceramics. Roger Capron was born in France in 1922. He studied at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris until 1943. He developed a passion for ceramics and was one of the first to settle in Vallauris, in the south of France. Shortly after, Vallauris becomes a center for avant-garde ceramics, with the frequent presence of Picasso. Roger Capron was the one who changed the game, introducing color and geometry to the Vallauris ceramics. He participated in numerous international fairs and won the gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1954. The eared vase is extensively featured on pages 50-51 in the the book "Roger Capron, Céramiste" by Pierre Staudenmeyer, 2023 re-edition, published by Norma. The eared model is a slip-cast earthenware vase made in white clay. This is the small version, measuring 6 inches (16 cm) in height. It is glazed in a deep emerald-green glaze, often used by Roger Capron in other collections, but very rarely seen used for the eared vase. Please note that this vase is not signed (see photos), most likely because it has no hand-painted decor, as opposed to many other eared vases. In very good vintage condition. No chips, no cracks, no repairs, no flaws in the glaze. Minor signs of wear consistent with use and age (see photos). Dimension: height 16 cm/6 1/4", diameter 15 cm/ 6", diameter top 10.5 cm/ 4 1/4", diameter base 6 cm/ 2 1/4". Weight: 825 g/ 1.82 lb
