About the Item

A stunning and unusually delicate soffiato glass vase by Vittorio Zecchin, Murano, circa 1920. This finely blown vessel is a rare smaller-scale example of Zecchin’s poetic vision—elegantly proportioned with a folded rim and foot, and beautifully applied handles. Exceptionally light, almost weightless, it exemplifies the Murano ideal of refined craftsmanship elevated to art. Vittorio Zecchin (1878–1947) was one of the most influential figures in the revival of Venetian glassmaking in the early 20th century. Trained as a painter and deeply influenced by the Symbolist and Secessionist movements, Zecchin brought a painter’s sensibility to glass. His aesthetic philosophy emphasized lyrical forms, transparency, and lightness—values that contrasted with the heavier Victorian styles of the late 19th century. Zecchin served as the first artistic director of Venini & Cappellin, later known as MVM Cappellin, where he reintroduced Renaissance forms with a modern delicacy. His work was central to repositioning Murano as a global center for avant-garde glass design, leading to international acclaim at exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale and the Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs. This vase is a quiet yet powerful example of Zecchin’s mastery. Its elegant silhouette and feather-light presence reflect the soffiato technique at its highest level—where molten glass is shaped solely by breath, without molds, relying entirely on the skill of the artisan. In excellent condition, this piece is a rare artifact from the golden age of Murano glass—a lyrical form that captures the spirit of Italian modernism in its earliest expression.
