About the Item

Soot Huxley vase by Elyse Graham Dimensions: W 14 x D 14 x H 25.5 cm Materials: Plaster, Resin MOLDED, DYED, AND FINISHED BY HAND IN LA. CUSTOMIZATION AVAILABLE. ALL PIECES ARE MADE TO ORDER Our Microbe Collection is inspired by the unique galaxy of microorganisms living within each of us. We created a technique for dying and stippling each vase that evokes the nature of microbes as they grow and colonize . Each vase is hand-cast with hydrocal plaster inside of a unique balloon shape. The interior of each piece is poured with layers of resin, making it waterproof. Finally, each vase is hand-dyed with custom mixed pigments and finished with a unique pattern of dyed plaster protuberances. The exterior of each vase is sealed with a UV resistant acrylic coating. These vases are all handmade and will vary slightly in shape, size, color and pattern. Founded in 2014 and based in Los Angeles, the Elyse Graham Studio is a place where unusual materials and experimental processes are implemented to create a melding of art and object. We design by making—with an emphasis on capturing the unique properties of the materials we use through exploration and innovation. Each piece we make is non-repeating and completely individual. We have intentionally designed every process we use — from how we mix our colors to how we cast our forms to highlight and celebrate the time-based, made by hand quality of our work. All of our pieces require a specific kind of care and attention at every level of production. At the core of our studio is our endless fascination with inviting the unknown into our work and exploring our passion for creating pieces that tell a story— about the materials they are made of, the artists who make them and the homes they live in. Each piece is a journey, come along with us. MEET OUR TEAM Elyse Graham is the founder and creative director of the studio. Driven by Elyse’s unique vision of building a studio that fosters and emphasizes connection, play, and experimentation (of people, processes, and in turn the objects created and shared) our small team works closely and collaboratively on each project. Elyse received a BA in sculpture and semiotics at Brown University. After years of making sculpture and running a business in jewelry design, Elyse decided to merge her separate practices and redirect her attention toward collectible design in 2013. The creative trajectory of the studio is heavily influenced by Graham’s background in fine art, specifically her interest in process-driven and material-based artwork. The studio’s vocabulary of shapes, patterns, and forms comes from a lineage of unconventional processes Graham has developed and built for working with plaster and resin. Graham shares her studio as well as her home with her husband, Lewis Mauk and their daughter, Eero. Miller Robinson is head of our production department. From pigmenting and casting materials for all of our products in plaster and resin to graphic and production design, they wear many hats in our studio. Miller joined our team in 2014 and has been an integral part of designing many of our experimental processes that have lead to the creation of our unique MetaMATERIAL. Like Elyse, Miller has a background in material and process-oriented making, which led to an instant connection and collaborative understanding between the two. Miller received their BFA from Otis College of Art and Design with a focus on painting, installation, performance, and writing. Their individual art practice focuses on the preservation and potentialities of underrepresented histories and encompasses objects, garments, actions, tattooing, and books. Their personal work has been exhibited in Los Angeles at the Southwest Museum, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, Heritage Square Museum, and with Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), as well as HORESEANDPONY Fine Arts in Berlin. Lewis Mauk is our studio and operations engineer. Working on facilities and production design as well as engineering and leading all of our large-scale constructions and installations, Lewis’ unique set of technical skills gives form and structure to our studio’s unconventional ideas and processes. Lewis has been working behind-the-scenes since the creation of the studio but joined our team full-time in 2020. Consistent with the rest of our team, Lewis has a background in process-driven fine art and has extensive training in woodworking, printmaking, and photography. He received a MFA from CalArts and has worked across the fields of education and fabrication. Lewis’ combined interest in the creation of personal archives mixed with his commitment to sustainable life practices, has brought a focus and important emphasis on designing studio projects and processes that imagine ways to reduce and reuse studio material fragments.

L Vase Designed by Virginia Frieyro for The Table Project, Spain, 2024
Located in Madrid, ES
This unique piece is part of The Table Project, a collaborative initiative developed in Spain in 2024. Originally designed by Isidro Blasco, the work has been reinterpreted by Virginia Frieyro, a visual artist whose practice lies at the intersection of expanded painting, installation, and spatial intervention. Her work stems from a formal investigation of color and gesture, often connected to architecture and bodily movement. In this intervention, Frieyro transforms the surface of the vase into an immersive pictorial support, applying glazes, stains, and chromatic gestures in a vibrant palette of pinks, blues, greens, and purples. The rhythmic and gestural composition resembles an abstract cartography, where color is layered and interwoven to create a sense of depth and motion. The result is a piece that transcends functionality, existing somewhere between sculpture and three-dimensional painting. About Virginia Frieyro Virginia Frieyro explores abstraction, color, and repetition, weaving vibrant compositions across surfaces. In her ceramic works, color becomes a kind of fabric or structure, inviting an emotional experience. She seeks to connect with the most intimate and sensitive aspects of perception—believing that it is in that precise moment where art truly happens. About The Table Project The Table Project is an initiative by artist Isidro Blasco. From his studio in the Carabanchel neighborhood of Madrid, a series of projects have been developed with the goal of creating distinctive artistic objects and fostering collaboration among local artists. Since 2019, The Table Project has promoted creative encounters grounded in Spain’s rich artisanal traditions, reimagined through a contemporary lens. The initiative has become a space where multidisciplinary artists come together to produce handcrafted works within the context of contemporary art. Launched by Blasco...
